Fly U.S. flag made in China, go to jail

The comment under the link in the Foundation for Economic Education's daily briefing sums it up: "This is embarrassing."

The American state of Minnesota has announced that all US flags sold in the state should be of American manufacture, and warned violaters of the law, that they would be punished by a 1,000 dollar fine, or imprisoned for three months.

The series of new laws is supported by the Flag Manufacturers' Association of America. It has complained about a flood of US flags, valued at 5.3 million dollars, imported mostly from China last year ...

The law is expected to be passed by the end of the year, reports The Times.

Where on the design of the flag is an area to desigfnate country of origin? Would it still be an official flag if it were emblazoned with the words MADE IN USA? I reckon it will be necessary to require flag flyers to maintain documentation of their flags' origin.

I think the law is really stupid. There's some interesting commentary about it here. -- medford

What a novel way to 'burn' the
American dream of the unhindered
market.
